Color Psychology

Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions. - Pablo Picasso
What Is Color?

In 1666, English scientist Sir Isaac Newton discovered that when pure white light is passed through a prism, it separates into all of the visible colors. Newton also found that each color is comprised of a single wavelength and cannot be separated any further into other colors.

Further experiments demonstrated that light could be combined to form other colors. For example, red light mixed with yellow light creates an orange color. A color resulting from a mix of two other colors is known as a metamer. Some colors, such as yellow and purple, cancel each other out when mixed and result in a white light. These competing colors are known as complements.

Color Psychology - The Psychological Effects of Color

While perceptions of color are somewhat subjective, there are some color effects that have universal meaning. Colors in the red area of the color spectrum are known as warm colors and include red, orange, and yellow. These warm colors evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility.

Colors on the blue side of the spectrum are known as
cool colors and include blue, purple, and green. These colors are often described as calm, but can also call to mind feelings of sadness or indifference.

Color Psychology as Therapy

Several ancient cultures, including the Egyptians and Chinese, practiced chromotherapy, or using colors to heal. Chromotherapy is sometimes referred to as light therapy or colourology and is still used today as a holistic or alternative treatment.

In this treatment:

  • Red was used to stimulate the body and mind and to increase circulation.

  • Yellow was thought to stimulate the nerves and purify the body.

  • Orange was used to heal the lungs and to increase energy levels.

  • Blue was believed to soothe illnesses and treat pain.

  • Indigo shades were thought to alleviate skin problems.

Most psychologists view color therapy with skepticism and point out that the supposed effects of color have been exaggerated. Colors also have different meanings in different cultures. Research has demonstrated in many cases that the mood-altering effects of color may only be temporary. A blue room may initially cause feelings of calm, but the effect dissipates after a short period of time.

water essay

“water”
Water is an everywhere chemical substance that is composed of hydrogen and oxygen (h2o). We normally know it as a clear liquid, which contains no taste and no scent. Water actually has blue color but when it is in small amount, it shows no color. There is 71percent of water covering this earth. It was a precious chemical substance that runs our lives.
The power of water is nowadays used to generate the electricity well. Water can produce electricity and can be transformed into many types of thing. In my point of view, I think that water is everywhere and it is a needed substance to live ours life. Water can be solid, liquid or gas. It can even be beautiful, useful or harmful. Why I said harmful, because water is powerful, and dangerous. There are many natural disasters from water such as tsunami or tornado and I have proved it myself, what I did on one of my experiment was putting water in a glass bottle which each of them contains different amount of water. Then, put it in a freezer for a night. In the ¼ bottle, water became an ice and nothing happened to the bottle. Another bottle, after I took it out of the freezer, the glass started to break. The full bottle acts very powerful, the water pops out of the glass bottle into pieces and the shape of bottle of ice stands dominated. Only pure water that changes their status can break the glasses, this is interesting. The pressure from the ice pushes the bottle out, this shows that water can be a media to destroy some breakable object.
In addition, I also played around with water and used other chemical as a tool to make water react. For example, I did the experiment on water and colors. I observed how color can travel in water. I also did the chromatography experiment which I used tissue paper to absorb the color water which I put in 4 colors inside. I watched how water brings up the pigment onto tissue paper. The colors that traveled in different distance and they separated themselves on the tissue paper.
Moreover, I played with water, ice and food coloring and baking soda and vinegar. I was just trying to mixed them all in different methods and see how it goes to get some inspiration. The baking soda powder reacted with vinegar but not water. It foamed up like a volcano.
There are more two experiments I did. First was adding up glutinous rice flour into water and mixing it well. It became a dough that you could transform it into any shapes. Second was adding up the gelatin chemical powder to water. I boiled it until the water and the gelatin powder mixed well together. It became a clear liquid that you could pour in any kinds of block. By letting it sit still for a while, then it will turn into the block shape.
However, I think that more experiments and more researches are still needed. For me, there are still a lot to learn out of “water”. Water can be many things. It is not only water that we use to drink, clean or cook. If we look carefully and keep chasing after water, we will be able to enter the living bodies of others. And apart from that, I am sure that I will discover many new facts of water, many that I have never known before. From this assignment I think that furthermore, I will discover what makes water so special.
